Open petition: Require shops to sell knives in lockable cabinet/behind a counter and ban offers
Created by Alan Bacon
Closes on
At present there is "Sale of knives: voluntary agreement by retailers" 2016 (updated in 2024). Many do not follow this agreement so legislation needs to be brought in to force retailers to restrict access to knives to help stop them being stolen and also getting into the hands of children.
We ask for legislation, which could be called Tracy’s Law, to require:
- All knives sold to be kept in a lockable cabinet or behind the counter
- Age restrictions to be clearly advertised
- Knife display/cabinets to be out of view of children
- Shops to report bulk buyers to authorities
- No special offers on knives
There are restrictions to buying knives online however the access to knives in shops is still too open. Knives have been stolen from shops or easily bought and used for the wrong reasons. This needs to stop.
