Rejected petition: Change the law on dangerous dogs to better protect children and infants

Rejected on

Infants and children are being killed by dogs in the UK. The current law focuses on protecting the public however fails to consider the danger in the home - where children, infants and babies live.

We ask the UK Government to review the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 to better protect children in the home. Most dog attacks occur in domestic settings, where infants and young children are most vulnerable. Current laws focus on public spaces but do not address risks inside the home. We urge stronger safeguards, clearer owner responsibilities, and improved data to prevent serious injuries and deaths.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

We are unclear how you would like the law to be changed. What we think is the relevant section of the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 to your petition, section 3 "Keeping dogs under proper control", explicitly applies to "any place in England or Wales (whether or not a public place)" and therefore applies within homes. We are therefore unclear how you would like the law to be changed.

You could submit a new petition setting out specifically what changes you would like to see in the law, or other action you would like the Government to take.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
