Rejected petition: Protect BBC News from job and funding cuts
Rejected on
Ensure the BBC has enough public funds to prevent severe job cuts at BBC News. It is one of the most respected, trusted and balanced news sources in the world and an invaluable British institution. It should be protected, given the current flood of foreign-backed interference in British life.
Staff at BBC News have reportedly been told to expect significant redundancies with the division reportedly set to cut costs by around 15 per cent.
This will have a significant impact on it's ability to provide respected, trusted and balanced reporting. Downsizing only makes biased, extreme news sources more powerful.
The recent Rycroft Report has revealed the constant, growing threat of foreign interference in British politics. The BBC News is an essential defence and must be protected.
Why was this petition rejected?
It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.
Particular funding decisions within the BBC are not a matter of Government responsibility - and even were the Government to increase funding the decision as to where to allocate that funding would still be for the BBC, not the Government
We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
