Rejected petition: Let the public trigger a general election when confidence is lost

Rejected on

There is no democratic way for the public to request an early general election, even when confidence in the government has collapsed. Parliament should create a legal process allowing voters to trigger a debate on holding an early election

I am a normal voter who feels the public currently has no voice when confidence in the government is clearly lost. Only the Prime Minister or MPs can trigger an early election, even if public support has collapsed. This creates a democratic gap. A modern system should allow voters to request a debate on an early general election.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

We already have a petition calling for a general election and another asking for a referendum 18 months in to a Parliament to see whether or not a Government still has support. You might wish to sign one of these:

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/750050
https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/758722

But we find your petition is unclear as it doesn't suggest what mechanism should be used to gauge public feeling on this matter.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
