Rejected petition: Stop UK restaurants from adding USA style service charges to food bills

Rejected on

USA style service charges are being added to food bills by many UK restaurants now, when the table waiting staff already get a wage to carry out this service. The USA do not pay a minimum wage like the UK, and the staff therefore rely on it. The Government should govern this exploitation for UK

This needs government support, as restaurants in the UK should be regulated to prevent citizens from being ripped off. The staff at all restaurants are being paid a wage to fulfil a service within their role, and that anything additional gratitude to service should be optional, and not added to the table bill. These charges are anywhere between 10-20% of the table bill, which is not justified.
