Open petition: Amend the Nursery Milk Scheme to fund alternatives for children with allergies
Created by Phoebe Abbott
Closes on
Allergic toddlers often sit with nothing to drink while peers have free milk unless parents pay a c£307/yr "allergy tax" for safe cartons which can create a large financial penalty or can leave vulnerable toddlers with a nutritional deficit. The scientific consensus now shows plant milks are safe.
Children should not be excluded from the benefits of the Nursery Milk Scheme due to medical need! Allergic toddlers are left out at snack time while peers get free state milk. Because this Scheme cannot reimburse dairy and soya-free alternatives, families can face an unfair c£307 yearly "allergy tax" per child to provide safe, fortified cartons if they can. For low-income families, this can create a major nutritional deficit or force children to feel excluded. Government reviews have confirmed that fortified plant milks are safe. It's time to stop medically discriminating against children.
