Open petition: Introduce a Mental Health Duty Law

Created by Joshua William Biggins
Closes on

Introduce a Mental Health Duty requiring institutions with power over people's lives such as workplaces, schools, healthcare, housing, justice & public services to proactively protect mental health. Require inspections, ratings & real consequences for non-compliance. Don't wait for people to break.

We believe UK law on mental health is reactive and institutions only act once someone discloses, suffers, or reaches crisis. Mental ill health costs the UK £300bn a year. 1 in 5 children has a mental health condition. We feel the Mental Health Act 2025 reformed how the state treats people in crisis but did nothing to prevent it. A Mental Health Duty would require workplaces, schools, healthcare, housing, justice and public services to proactively protect mental health. Prevention could save £5–£99 per £1 spent.
