Open Increase Passenger Carrying Vehicle GVW limits to accommodate air conditioning

Current maximum permitted Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) restrictions for buses & coaches often do not allow for air conditioning to be fitted to some buses. We believe this needs to be addressed as it’s putting Bus Drivers and others at risk.

Every summer we see news reports about excessive heat in bus driver’s cabs, reaching as high as 50 degrees on occasion. We believe the limits need to be amended to accommodate the extra weight of a properly functioning air conditioning system. The high temperatures experienced in some bus driver’s cabs are putting them at high risk of heat stroke which can cause them to lose control of the bus. Such loss of control can be fatal for many.
