Open petition: Legislate to ensure public inquiry recommendations lead to action
Created by Melanie Leahy
Closes on
The Government must establish a statutory duty on public bodies covered in the findings or recommendations from public inquiries to report progress regularly on their implementation or set out reasons for such recommendations not being implemented, with other means suggested for remedying failings.
These reports should be public so that people affected by the subject of the inquiry can see demonstrable progress towards remedying the failings in question. There should also be a mechanism for implementation to be independently verified to ensure recommendations have been effectively carried out, and for reasons given for non-implementation to be transparent, independently scrutinised and assessed. This proposed law will be called the Matthew Leahy Law in memory of my son, Matthew Leahy, whose death inspired my campaign for greater accountability and lasting change.
