Open petition: Require warnings for social media content about open water swimming
Created by Simon Carr
Closes on
Under the Online Safety Act, social media platforms have a duty to remove or restrict access to harmful content. This does not apply to open water swimming videos. I want the government to classify these videos as dangerous and require this content to carry warnings.
We believe open water swimming videos posted online are an encouragement to young people to get into the water, as these videos are often made to look like great fun, however it is extremely dangerous especially for younger people, and the videos do not have any warnings placed upon them. I speak through experience from 31 yrs in the fire service after attending many incidents for water rescue purposes. The Fire Service should also be given more funding for public education on water safety.
