Open petition: Fund plans to transition publicly funded schools to open source software
Created by Daniel Coburn
Closes on
We call on the Government to fund the transition of primary and secondary schools away from closed source private software and operating systems (like Windows and MS Office) to what we believe are secure, low cost and open source alternatives (like Linux and LibreOffice)
Many schools default to teaching with expensive closed source tools and licences, which in our view limits school budgets when there are free alternatives. We believe that by teaching youths exclusively closed source software in school they continue to pay the expense of these tools into adulthood, increasing ICT costs for households and businesses. Other European nations have already begun the change, which we think improves digital sovereignty and national security. In our view, the change is inevitable, it’s just which generation will be part of it.
