Open petition: Set a statutory sugar limit for baby and toddler food

Created by Sophie Hutchison
Closes on

We want the Government to set a statutory sugar limit for baby and toddler food and to review packaging that could serve to obscure high sugar content.

Many commercial baby and toddler foods are packed with hidden sugars, including concentrated fruit purées, designed to sweeten products and, we believe, to build early brand loyalty. Packaging often uses potentially misleading claims like "no added sugar" or "one of your 5-a-day," masking the high total sugar content. This can help drive childhood obesity and potential cancers, while we believe it also hooks children on overly sweet tastes. The Government must introduce legally binding sugar caps on infant food and mandate honest, clear ingredient labelling on the front of packs to protect children's health.
