Rejected petition: Title Change the law to require asylum claims in the first safe country

Rejected on

Introduce legislation requiring people seeking asylum to claim protection in the first safe country they reach after leaving their home country. Individuals who travel through multiple safe countries without claiming asylum should not normally be eligible to claim asylum in the UK.

Why do you want this?

I believe these changes would strengthen border security, improve public confidence in the immigration system, and ensure that the UK’s asylum system focuses on those most in need of protection while improving public safety for the British citizens.

Why was this petition rejected?

We can't publish petitions when the request is something that's already happening or something that has been announced since you started your petition.

We think your petition is covered by Government or Parliament action already. If you'd like something else, you could start a new petition clearly explaining what it is.

The UK government’s position is that refugees should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach.

In addition, the law already allows for the Home Secretary to declare an asylum claim inadmissible if the person “has a connection to a safe third State”.
