Rejected petition: Longer sentences for domestic abusers

Rejected on

Every day I see a new story about a severe case of domestic violence and the outcome is often zero jail time or one or two years. These abusers cause extreme violence and devastating long lasting effects to the victim. I do not believe that cases of domestic violence are taken seriously enough.

As a victim of abuse, I know how it can tear your life apart and cause long lasting trauma. What will it take for this level of violence and control to be taken seriously? Do more people need to die at the hands of their abuser? I suggest that something is done before it reaches this point. It’s an extremely serious offence that I believe isn’t taken seriously enough. People have a responsibility to protect victims. I find it unbelievable that in 2026 this isn’t being dealt with more seriously.
