Rejected petition: Require spouse‑visa holders to return home when a marriage breaks down

Rejected on

I want the UK Government to strengthen spouse‑visa rules to protect UK citizens from being deceived into marriages that are not genuine. I entered my marriage in good faith but later discovered I had been misled from the start and that the relationship was used for immigration advantage.

Many UK citizens have faced similar situations where a spouse‑visa was used for immigration advantage rather than a genuine marriage. Requiring spouse‑visa holders to return to their home country when a relationship ends would help prevent abuse, reduce fraud, and ensure that the spouse‑visa route is used fairly and sincerely. The system should protect the integrity of UK citizenship and ensure its benefits are not taken for granted.

Why was this petition rejected?

We can't publish petitions when the request is something that's already happening or something that has been announced since you started your petition.

We think your petition is covered by Government or Parliament action already. If you'd like something else, you could start a new petition clearly explaining what it is.

Family visas are curtailed and spouses are given 60 days to leave the UK if they are separated or divorced.

If a spouse who is not a British National wishes to remain in the UK, they must apply for another type of visa if they wish to stay.
