Rejected petition: Require social media platforms to remove animal cruelty content

Rejected on

Strengthen the Online Safety Act to require social media platforms to remove, demonetise and report animal cruelty content, and introduce effective penalties for platforms that fail to comply with these requirements.

Animal cruelty content involving pets, wildlife, livestock and other animals continues to be shared online. Many users report such content but believe it remains accessible. We believe animal cruelty should not be treated as entertainment or a source of income. Stronger legal requirements are needed to help ensure such content is removed, suspected criminal offences can be investigated, and platforms comply with UK online safety laws.

Why was this petition rejected?

We can't publish petitions when the request is something that's already happening or something that has been announced since you started your petition.

We think your petition is covered by Government or Parliament action already. If you'd like something else, you could start a new petition clearly explaining what it is.

Under the UK's Online Safety Act 2023, animal cruelty is classified as "priority illegal content" and is already required to be removed.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
