Rejected petition: State funeral for the Major Oak

Rejected on

The Major Oak has recently died. It was the most famous tree in the country and lived for over a thousand years, far longer than any monarch. The government should organise a state funeral / ceremony for collective mourning.

The Major Oak, the famous ancient oak tree of Sherwood Forest, home of Robin Hood, and the most significant plant in our national mythology, has died. We should formally mourn it.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

Technically, a tree cannot have a state funeral, as that honour is traditionally reserved for high-ranking government officials or monarchs.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
