Rejected petition: Reverse the BBC’s Decision to Scrap The World Tonight on Radio 4
Rejected on
The BBC has announced it will axe the Radio 4 program The World Tonight after fifty years of broadcasting, along with esteemed programs like Crossing Continents. These represent the epitome of high quality British public service broadcasting and should be preserved.
This is about maintaining the standard of high quality public service broadcasting. It is clear efficiencies need to be found in the BBC but the current approach seems short sighted. The World Tonight will be replaced in part by existing World Service news programming. However, as highlighted by the International Broadcasting Trust, such substitution is “unlikely to meet the specific needs and interests of UK audiences as the World Tonight has expertly done for so many years”.
