Many voters backed Keir Starmer personally, not just Labour. Since modern elections focus heavily on party leaders, some argue that if leadership changes or public confidence falls, a general election should be held to renew the government's democratic mandate.
Many people feel UK elections have become increasingly presidential, with voters focusing on who will be Prime Minister rather than on local MPs or party structures. Campaigns, debates and media coverage all centre on party leaders. Therefore, some argue that a government's legitimacy depends heavily on the leader voters expected to govern. If that leader's position changes significantly or public trust declines, a fresh election could allow voters to reaffirm or withdraw their support.
