Rejected petition: Call a General Election: Policies and leadership are outside of election Mandate
Rejected on
Can a government retain democratic authority, or legitimate mandate, following a leadership change or changes to manifesto policy.
We’ve had repeated unelected changes to Governments and policies. The process has become standard practice, and our constitution needs to be updated.
1) It is undemocratic when elections for new Leaders are held in secret or through unelected groups that do not represent the wider nation.
i) New leaders must be elected by the people through a public referendum or election.
ii) Where a Government fails to hold a public leadership vote a General Election must be held.
2) When policy aligns with the manifesto, the mandate claim is strong. Material omission or change in policy from the elected manifesto should trigger a referendum or election
