Rejected petition: Require an election within 3 months of a new Prime Minister

Rejected on

Require a General Election within three months of the appointment of any new Prime Minister who takes office following the resignation of their predecessor, ensuring that the new Prime Minister and Government receive a democratic mandate from voters.

The Prime Minister is the most powerful political office in the United Kingdom. While a governing party may replace its leader during a Parliament, voters are increasingly asked to choose between leaders as well as parties and manifestos. When a Prime Minister resigns, a successor can take office without endorsement from the electorate. We believe a new Prime Minister should seek a democratic mandate through a General Election within three months.
