We want Government to set up an independent review of traffic policing priorities, enforcement powers & resource allocation to ensure resources are focused on serious crime, dangerous driving, road safety threats & accident response, & ensuring traffic enforcement is proportionate to actual risk.

Many people believe police resources should prioritise tackling robbery, theft, violent crime, dangerous driving and serious road safety risks rather than low-risk traffic offences with limited impact on public safety. This review should consider greater use of camera networks and automated enforcement where appropriate, whether penalties are focused on conduct that creates a genuine safety risk, and whether offences such as middle-lane driving on otherwise empty roads should attract penalties where no danger, obstruction or disruption has occurred. The Government should publish the findings and consider reforms that improve public safety and confidence in traffic policing.
