Open petition: Ban breeding & use of doves & pigeons at weddings, funerals & sex reveal events

Created by Heather Marjorie Cunningham
Closes on

Legislate to prevent breeding of doves and pigeons intended for release at weddings/funerals and make it illegal to pay to release birds at such events. Many of these birds are unable to navigate their way back home and as they are domesticated, they may not survive in the wild after being released.

Release of white doves and pigeons at family events has become a fashionable yet, in our view, cruel spectacle and an industry is growing to accommodate this. We believe that a majority of the birds are released to die slowly from starvation as they have been reared in aviaries and fed daily with no opportunity to develop navigational or foraging skills or ability to find appropriate shelter. We think this industry needs to be stopped forthwith and not facilitated by churches or wedding organisers.
