Open petition: Update school uniform guidance for extreme weather in England

We feel schools respond inconsistently and should do the following in high temperatures: Yellow – permit wearing secure sandals; Amber –no blazers and ties and option to wear PE kit; Red - students to wear own light, comfortable clothing.

Similar adjustments should be considered for other weather warnings, like boots for snow.

The Government already advises relaxing uniform rules in extreme weather, yet responses in different schools can vary. One school may close in response to the heat, while another nearby keeps pupils in full uniform. Schools have other policies to ensure a child-centred and coordinated approach to children’s safety and wellbeing. We believe our proposal aligns with that intention - ensuring children are safe, comfortable, and able to learn—at a time when many adults already receive similar adjustments at work.
