Rejected petition: Require a General Election if a Prime Minister loses support of their party
Rejected on
We call on the Government to change the law so that if a Prime Minister is replaced during a Parliament, a General Election must be held. No one should become Prime Minister without first receiving a mandate from the public.
Recent events have exposed a serious flaw in our democratic system. The prospect of another Prime Minister taking office without a public vote is unacceptable. We call on the Government to hold an immediate General Election and to change the law so that, in future, no new Prime Minister can take office during a Parliament without first receiving a mandate from the electorate through a General Election.
