Rejected petition: Require a General Election when a new Prime Minister takes office
Rejected on
Since 2016 the UK has had seven Prime Ministers without a public vote weakening democratic trust. A new PM can alter the governments programme or introduce major constitutional changes without a fresh electoral mandate. Voters must be able to approve substantial changes to the government's platform.
Recent local election results show growing public dissatisfaction with the current system. New Prime Ministers could significantly change the Government's programme without proposals being approved by voters. The public should have the opportunity to vote on any substantial changes to the governing party’s manifesto or programme before implementation. We therefore call on Parliament to legislate that any new Prime Minister must first seek a democratic mandate through a General Election.
