Rejected petition: Require a General Election When a Prime Minister Leaves Office

Rejected on

We call on the UK Government to require a general election whenever a Prime Minister steps down. A new Prime Minister should have a democratic mandate from the public rather than being chosen solely by the governing party, helping to strengthen accountability and public confidence.

We call on the UK Government to require a general election whenever a Prime Minister resigns, is removed, or steps down during a parliamentary term.
While the UK's parliamentary system allows the governing party to appoint a new leader without an election, many believe a new Prime Minister should receive a democratic mandate from voters. This would strengthen accountability and public confidence in government.
