When England take the pitch, a nation holds its breath as one — bound together by pride, history and hope, wherever the clock stands. Monday 6 July’s 1am kick-off asks everything of us. We call on the government and His Majesty to stand with the nation and announce a bank holiday. Come on England!
There is something in the roar of a crowd, the flutter of flags from car windows, the crackle of a radio in the shed, that no other sport gives us. The Three Lions carry more than a badge, they carry the hopes of every corner of this country, from Cornwall to Cumbria, from tower blocks to village greens. When they play, we are not divided, we are one voice, one heartbeat, one nation daring to believe. That pride deserves to be honoured, not squeezed into a lunch break. Come on England!
