Open petition: Create national guidance for ‘Slow for Cats’ warning signs in rural communities
Created by Penny Corbett
Closes on
Introduce national guidance for local authorities to install “Slow for Cats” warning signs and related traffic-calming measures in rural and semi-rural areas where there is evidence of frequent domestic cat road deaths.
Domestic cats are killed or injured on roads in villages and rural areas annually. There is no national system for recording cat road deaths in place.
Cats are not included in road traffic casualty statistics, and there is no requirement for incidents involving pets to be reported. As a result, local authorities lack consistent evidence to identify high-risk areas.
Rural communities have high numbers of free roaming cats, with fast-moving country roads. This can lead to preventable collisions.
