Require any government-led streaming prominence regimes or changes to digital broadcasting to be enacted solely via a standalone Act of Parliament. Prevent the DCMS from implementing algorithm manipulation or phasing out aerial TV via secondary legislation.
We call on the Government to abandon plans legally to compel smart TVs and social media platforms to algorithmically prioritise state-approved media over independent competitors, and to preserve traditional aerial TV indefinitely as a vital national fail-safe. Using secondary legislation or Statutory Instruments to implement these sweeping algorithmic changes bypasses democratic scrutiny, avoids a Commons vote, and undermines the public's right to choose their own news.
