Rejected petition: Ban MPs from Standing in By-Elections They Trigger Themselves
Rejected on
Change the law so that any Member of Parliament who voluntarily resigns their seat and triggers a by-election is disqualified from standing as a candidate in that by-election.
Members of Parliament are elected to serve their constituents for the duration of a Parliament. If an MP chooses to resign their seat, the resulting by-election should allow voters to choose new representation. Preventing the former MP from immediately standing again would promote fairness, reduce unnecessary election costs and strengthen public confidence in the democratic process.
