Open petition: Regulate the UK's precious metals buying market to protect sellers
Created by Jon White
Closes on
We call on the Government to regulate the UK's precious metals buying market. This should include mandatory price transparency, regulated postal and travelling buying services, a cash payment threshold, and mandatory ID checks on sellers, to protect consumers and prevent stolen goods being sold on.
Anyone can start buying gold and silver from the public tomorrow, with no licence, no accreditation, and no obligation to disclose rates. Some operators pay a fraction of true value with no upfront transparency. Scrap metal dealers have been banned from paying cash and required to verify sellers' identities since 2013, to stop stolen goods being sold on. We believe gold and silver deserve the same basic protection. I run an accredited gold buying business and support these changes myself.
