Open petition: Geofenced 5 km/h limits & more accountability for e-bike and e-scooter providers
Created by Wayne Pettit
Closes on
We propose mandatory national standards for rental e-bikes and e-scooters. We think operators should use existing technology to enforce 5 km/h geofenced speed limits in pedestrian zones and be required to improve age verification. The Government should introduce fines for non-compliance.
We want to make our streets safer by requiring rental e-bike and e-scooter operators to use the safety technology already built into their fleets to impose lower speeds on their products. Currently, GPS and 'geofencing' allow operators to exercise precise control over speed and location. We are calling for national standards that mandate 5 km/h speed limits in pedestrian zones, mandate strict age checks, and for the Government to impose fines on operators who fail to comply. We are not calling for a ban, but for responsible, regulated use.
