Rejected petition: Petition for Democratic Accountability Through Automatic General Elections
Rejected on
We, the undersigned, call on the UK Government to introduce legislation requiring an automatic General Election if a Prime Minister resigns, is replaced, or if the governing party fails to honour the commitments made in its election manifesto without exceptional national circumstances.
The election manifesto should be treated as a legally enforceable commitment to the electorate, ensuring governments remain accountable to the people who elected them. If those commitments are abandoned or the Prime Minister changes, the public should have the right to choose whether to renew the Government's mandate through a General Election. For too long we have had fake promises or PMs leaving the role to have a unelected person take over. Change needs to happen NOW
