Rejected petition: Councilors and MPs to be required to be DBS checked and on the Update Service

Councilors and Members of Parliament are not required to undergo a DBS check and be on the update service, it is only voluntary.
They make decisions that affect every aspect of our lives and yet this is expected of teachers, healthcare workers, youth leaders, carers, foster carers and volunteers.
A voluntary DBS check only reflects information available on the date it is issued, unless the individual is enrolled in the DBS Update Service. There is currently no requirement for ongoing monitoring.
When concerns arise about the conduct of elected representatives, unlike employees, who are subject to established HR procedures and safeguarding policies, elected representatives can fall into a grey area where responsibilities are less clear.
Public trust starts with accountability.
