Large data centres can place significant demands on electricity, water and land while affecting local communities and biodiversity. As AI and cloud computing expand, the Government should strengthen planning and environmental protections by requiring independent assessments of energy use, water consumption, carbon emissions, habitat impacts and grid capacity before approval, ensuring digital growth is balanced with long-term environmental sustainability.
