Rejected petition: Petition to change the national anthem to Wonderwall if we win the world cup

Rejected on

We petition the Government to adopt Oasis's 'Wonderwall' as the National Anthem, played at all future state occasions, should the England men's football team win the FIFA World Cup. A nation deserves a singalong worthy of the achievement.

"Wonderwall" by Oasis is arguably England's real unofficial anthem, sung on terraces, in pubs, and at every celebration for decades. If England finally win the World Cup, we believe the moment deserves a soundtrack the whole nation already knows by heart. This petition calls on the Government to formally recognise "Wonderwall" as the National Anthem, to be played at state occasions, replacing "God Save the King" as the definitive symbol of a footballing nation finally coming home.

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s about something that the UK Government or Parliament is not directly responsible for.

This isn’t something that the UK Government or Parliament would be able to do. The use of the present National Anthem is a matter of tradition rather than having any legal or constitutional status.

You can find more information about the history and status of the national anthem here:

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
