Open petition: Change urinary incontinence to bladder health for NHS strategies & fund campaign
Created by Frances Morrison
Closes on
Direct the NHS to replace the term "urinary incontinence" with "bladder health" as the primary term in all NHS strategies, including in England's Women's Health Strategy, neighbourhood women's health services and Women's Health Hubs.
We would also like the Government to fund a national campaign for retailers and pharmacies to adopt the same terminology in store.
14 million people in the UK live with urinary incontinence, including one in three women, yet many hide it due to shame. Over half of women with pelvic floor symptoms never seek help; one in five say embarrassment is why.
We believe the term "urinary incontinence" is part of the problem. "Bladder health" could reframe the same conditions as something to manage, like heart or mental health. We're asking Government to require the NHS to make that change, and back the women who need it.
