Rejected petition: Make Restraining Orders mandatory after criminal proceedings
Rejected on
Make Restraining Orders mandatory for women to remain safe, following criminal proceedings. Far too many women are left with no protection after hearing their perpetrator has been acquitted from criminal proceedings meaning their lives could be at further risk.
Out of tens of thousands of domestic abuse prosecutions handled by the Crown Prosecution Service annually, only a small fraction result in formal acquittals (not guilty verdicts) after a trial, while a larger portion of non-convictions stem from retracted victim statements or dropped evidence. This poses as a further risk to the victim as the perpetrator can regain access by harassing, stalking or worse, due to bail conditions being lifted.

We are not clear about the action being sought by this petition, as we are not sure how restraining orders could be used when wrongdoing has not been formally established.
