Rejected petition: Ban misleading food packaging
Rejected on
Ban misleading food packaging that hides the true size or quantity of products. Packaging must not obscure contents, and images must accurately represent the product’s shape, size, colour and portion count, so consumers know exactly what they are buying and are not disappointed upon opening.
Consumers are left disappointed, lied to and ripped off. Too many food products use oversized packaging, hidden compartments or misleading labels that make items such as meat and fish appear much larger than they really are. Product images can also exaggerate portion sizes, colours or the number of pieces inside. Clear rules should require packaging to not obscure item size, and images to accurately represent the contents, helping consumers make informed choices and reducing deceptive marketing.

Packers and importers are required to ensure that food labelling and packaged goods are labelled with the weight or volume (net quantity) of the food. The information must be visible, easy to read and not be able to be damaged.
