Require a general election whenever a Prime Minister resigns, is removed, or is replaced during a Parliament, so the incoming Prime Minister must obtain a fresh democratic mandate from the electorate before taking office.
At present, a new Prime Minister can take office without a general election if they are chosen by the governing party. We believe this weakens democratic accountability. The law should require an immediate general election whenever a Prime Minister resigns, is removed, or is replaced, so the public—not only political parties—decides who governs the United Kingdom through a fresh democratic mandate.
