Rejected petition: Require citizenship for voting in Scottish Parliament and local elections
Rejected on
Introduce legislation so that only British citizens, Irish citizens and qualifying Commonwealth citizens can vote in elections to the Scottish Parliament and Scottish local government elections.
The 2020 Scottish Act lets all legally resident foreign nationals (including temporary visa holders) vote in Scottish Parliament and local elections from age 16. This is wider than the UK Parliament franchise.
We ask the UK Government to introduce legislation restoring a citizenship based franchise, using Parliament’s residual power to legislate on any matter.
