Rejected petition: Introduce statutory protections & retraining rights for workers displaced by AI

Rejected on

The Government should introduce statutory protections for workers whose jobs are eliminated or significantly changed by AI or automation. This should include a legal duty on employers to consult staff before AI-driven redundancies, minimum notice & compensation requirements, & access to retraining

AI is already reshaping entire industries, often with no warning or support for affected workers. Existing redundancy law wasn’t designed for this scale of disruption. We’re not asking government to ban AI — we’re asking it to make sure workers aren’t left with nothing when their jobs disappear. Regulation is needed urgently before AI’s own self development outpaces our ability to implement new laws and gain tighter control of the technology

Why was this petition rejected?

It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.

Petitions need to call on the Government or Parliament to take a specific action.

We're not sure exactly how the provisions in your petition would differ from the provisions currently available.

Statutory redundancy notice periods already exist. They are:

• at least one week’s notice if employed between one month and 2 years.
• one week’s notice for each year if employed between 2 and 12 years.
• 12 weeks’ notice if employed for 12 years or more.

In addition, statutory compensation already exists in the form of statutory redundancy pay. You can find out more about this here: Calculate your statutory redundancy pay - GOV.UK

We are also unclear what you mean by “access to retraining” and whether you are calling for a statutory right or dedicated funding to retraining, whether you want retraining to be provided in the same field or all job fields, and whether you are calling for employers or the Government to provide retraining.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
