Rejected petition: Introduce safeguards to stop misuse of Lasting Power of Attorney powers
Rejected on
We call on the Government to reform the Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) system in England and Wales to improve safeguards and accountability.
LPAs give attorneys significant power, but limited oversight can exclude families from important health, welfare and financial information.
We ask the Government to introduce:
* Automatic notification of close family members when an LPA is registered, unless there is a safeguarding reason.
* Appropriate welfare updates from care homes and professionals
* Stronger oversight of attorney decisions.
LPAs must protect individual choice while preventing misuse and unfair family exclusion.
Why was this petition rejected?
It’s not clear what the petition is asking the UK Government or Parliament to do.
I'm afraid we find large parts of this text unclear.
"Appropriate welfare updates from care homes and professionals": to whom and in what context?
Who do you want to have "oversight of attorney decisions."? Certain family members? A public body? Does oversight mean they get information or also powers to override the attorney(s)?
If you have concerns about a power of attorney that has been given to someone, then you may find this web-page useful:

You may also want to consider submitting a new petition which makes these points clearer.
We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards.
