Open Issue a formal UK Government apology to the victims of the Tinker Experiment

We call upon the UK Government to apologise for its role in the Tinker Experiment. We also want the Government to recognise the intergenerational trauma caused to families within the indigenous highland traveller community.

The Tinker Experiment was a range of policies that targeted Traveller groups in Scotland. Such policies included assimilation into sub-standard accommodation and the unlawful removal of Traveller children from their families. This was done in an attempt to disintegrate Traveller life, liberty and ethnicity. This has been cited by independent human rights assessments as the cause of severe cultural harm. While the Scottish Government has apologised, the UK Government has yet to apologise for its role.
