Open petition: Review Local Government Reorganisation decisions
Created by Ashley Baxter
Closes on
This petition asks the government to review recent Ministerial decisions on Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) particularly in relation to the size and practicality of councils in rural areas.
The Government has recently announced government plans for LGR. In our view, this announcement ignored all 6 of the criteria originally outlined by Government. We think that the proposals pay no attention to community cohesion, local context or residents’ views and do not support devolution. We think the rural parts of shire counties such as Devon, Lincs, Leics, Notts and Rutland will become unitary councils far too large in geographical area and numbers of elected members, yet the proposals put people further away from decision-making.
