Open petition: Empower councils to penalise landlords and seize crime-linked commercial units
Created by Richie Legend
Closes on
We call on the Government to grant local authorities statutory powers to penalise commercial property owners who repeatedly allow premises to harbour criminal activity or fall into severe decay. This must include expedited compulsory purchase powers to repossess and repurpose such units.
Temporary closure orders and small fines against transient operators fail to deter illegal activity on our high streets. Commercial landlords currently face minimal liability when their properties host persistent crime or rot into dangerous disrepair. Elevating penalties for negligent property owners and giving councils the authority to seize chronically offending premises will disrupt organised crime, restore town centres, and give legitimate independent businesses a fair opportunity.
