Rejected petition: Split Westmorland and Furness Council to create a unitary Furness Council.
Rejected on
We call on the government to separate the Furness region from Westmorland and Furness Council to create a standalone unitary authority. This new council should mirror the Barrow and Furness parliamentary constituency boundaries, restoring localised decision-making to our community.
Since the 2023 reorganization, Furness residents have faced a major democratic deficit. Crucial decisions on highways, traffic, and spending are made over an hour away in Kendal or Penrith. This remote administration fails to understand the unique economic and industrial needs of our area. A dedicated Furness Council will restore local financial control, give residents a real voice, and ensure public services are run by people who live in the community.
