Open petition: Ban fires, BBQs & sky lanterns in England’s countryside & wild spaces year round

Create offences, punishable by substantial fines, for using open fires, portable barbecues or sky lanterns on or beside forests, woodland, moorland, heathland, peatland, grassland, sand dunes, nature reserves or agricultural land.

Hotter, drier conditions mean a flame or ember can ignite vegetation and cause a wildfire. These fires kill and displace wildlife, destroy nests, food and shelter, damage peat and soils, and erase habitats that take decades or longer to recover; some populations may never return. Guidance and signs are not enough. Exemptions should apply only to lawful land management and authorised sites with fire-resistant surfaces, fire-control equipment and complete extinguishment.
