We call on the UK Government to require supermarkets and large retailers to give customers a 20% discount for using self-service checkouts.

Customers do work once done by paid staff. Retailers save money through automation, so customers should share those savings.

Self-service checkouts are now common in many supermarkets, with fewer staffed tills available. Customers often have little choice but to scan, bag and pay for their own shopping while still paying the same prices. Retailers benefit from lower staffing costs and improved efficiency, yet those savings are rarely passed on to consumers. A 20% discount would ensure the financial benefits of self-service technology are shared more fairly with customers.
